The creation of a Tarot Deck

Well, it is finally coming to fruition, my first Tarot Deck.

I have three others lined up, but the first one is already in progress. A friend suggested that I blog the experience, so here we are.

I am working with a local artist named David Keen. David is an awesome guy and I will introduce him once he feels brave enough, he is a bit shy. Some of you may have seen some of David's products in our shop area at the Collective. If not, you should check them out.

I met David when my sister Kc and I had our second Healing Centre on Putiki back in 2011. (The first centre was in Victoria Court in 2008.) He is a lovely guy and very old-school, and his art reflects that style. He doesn't even have a computer or internet, nor does he want them. He does pen illustrations then brings them to me for digital rendering. This is really such a cool project in that regard. I love that I have to wait for the art and that he can take his time creating.

David comes by every week and we work together on what we want to make next, then he draws up what we discussed, or if I am lucky, he brings some badass surprises he was inspired to do. This is fully a co-creation project and it is evolving every time we meet. We are both of the mindset of flow and letting it create itself.

We started running through ideas three or four weeks ago. Then he brought in some drawings and we brainstormed from there. We have about 11 cards drafted and have been working on dialling in the design. David is working on more illustrations of the suits and the border at the moment. I can't wait to see what he brings next week.

I am doing the writing for the book and we will share some of the art and writing as we progress. We are still deciding which way to go for publishing so we will let you know about that as we go along. We may do a Kickstarter campaign, go through a publisher, or we may print the decks ourselves to distribute. Time will tell how this goes. For now, we are having fun with the design process. Below is a sample of David's work from 1992.

Be sure to follow our journey with creating our Tarot Deck for sneak peeks and updates on the process. I am looking forward to sharing our progress with you all.
